CSI Initiatives
The Safal Group lives by its values of being a responsible and involved corporate citizen.
The Safal Group’s Social Investment programmes are primarily focused on the communities in which it operates, particularly those most afflicted by poverty and social disadvantage. Its programmes focus on three areas in which it can make the greatest impact: Education, Health and Shelter.
The fourth leg of the Group’s Corporate Responsibility programme focuses on the Environment. Best manufacturing practices are applied to minimise the impact of the Group’s manufacturing processes. Additional initiatives focus on reforestation, land rehabilitation, recycling and resource protection.

The Institute also strives to ensure that most students are gainfully employed on completion of their courses, which further contributes to the socio- economic uplift of the wider community in the area. Over 900 NITA Certified graduates have qualified since opening, and the Mariakani area is richer for their skills and earning power.
The Mabati Cornell Kiswahili Prize for African Literature
In November 2014, this prize was established with the express goal of recognizing writing in African languages and encouraging translation from, between and into African languages.
The prize awards are to the best-unpublished manuscript or book in the categories of fiction, poetry and memoir, and graphic novels.
East African Educational Publishers publish the winning fiction book in Kiswahili, and the best poetry book is translated and published by the Africa Poetry Book Fund.
Kiswahili is a language spoken widely in both Tanzania and Kenya, this so the two Safal Group companies with operations in these countries (MRM in Kenya and Alaf in Tanzania) join up to sponsor The Mabati Cornell Kiswahili Prizes.
The prize money amounting to USD 15,000 per year distributed to the 3 categories, aims to encourage participation.
The adoption of green technology, efficiency in production and recyclable technologies in our operations aims to ensure continuous improvement and conservation of our environment.
Our environmental management system provides a framework for continual improvement at our manufacturing and office sites. It helps us work towards the ambitious environmental targets set out in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
In 2017, Safal Eye in the Wild, a photography competition was established to raise awareness of the beauty and vulnerability of our natural environment as we highlight the need for conservation.
This initiative focuses on different aspects of the environment. The inaugural launch was on our wildlife with focus on conservation of trees & water in the subsequent years.
This initiative started in Kenya and has grown into all East African operations of the Safal Group, resulting in its rebranding to Safal Eye in the Wild for the 2019 competition from the initial MRM Eye in The Wild Photography Competition.
The Safal Group’s Social Investment programs are primarily focused on sheltering the communities in which we operate, particularly those most affected by poverty and social disadvantage.
We believe our Communities are our Homes and in collaborating with our communities, we have a structured approach to shelter, encompassing re-roofing many projects annually (projects are put through a predetermined qualification process and ‘hand held’ to completion). We are in the roofing business and therefore sheltering the less fortunate members of our society is of prime concern to us.
